PREVENTION IS THE CURE

Supporting non profits who care to make a difference is one of my love to do's! Keep A Breast Foundation does so much work to help prevent (mark PREVENT) breast cancer. There is so much research out there showing that our lifestyle choices are directly linked to disease. Did you know that cosmetics like our makeup, soaps and shampoos often contain harmful chemicals that literally will attack our cells and cause cancer? Besides skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among American women according to http://www.keep-a-breast.org/get-educated/cancer-facts/. It accounts for nearly 1 in 3 cases of cancers. Today, about 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.

When I visit the Keep A Breast Foundation I always learn I lot of freaky facts about cancer, one of them being that they have actually found remains of parabens in the lumps!!! There are many different parabens out there, the most harmful ones known are methylparaben & propylparaben so look out for these on the labels. According to http://www.breastcancer.org/ many of these chemicals are considered hormone disruptors. Hormone disruptors can affect how estrogen and other hormones act in the body, by blocking them or mimicking them, which throws off the body's hormonal balance. Because estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer develop and grow, many women choose to limit their exposure to these chemicals that can act like estrogen.

Keep A Breast states that every woman can decrease her risk of breast cancer by living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding common toxins that are linked to cancer, and making smart diet choices.

So especially ladies, be mindful about the products you put on your body, including lotions, sunscreens, deodorants, nail polishes, makeup. I bet you will find at least one those no-no parabens hidden in the forest of ingredients of your cosmetics.

Make your workouts fun!

To me physical activity plays a big role in our overall health & happiness. I make sure I do at least one training session a day. Some days when I feel like I "don't have time" to train, I try make my training more creative & fun. I always come back with a bigger smile on my face than before I worked out, because when we use our bodies, we release endorphins. Here is a fun little yoga strength / balance sequence from a hiking trip in YOSEMITE national park. It's a core focused practice that you should ease yourself into, shall you attempt on trying at home :) Happy training!

Why summer activities are great for PREPARing for the winter

Sailing, kayaking, waterskiing free-diving, climbing, surfing and stand up paddling are all fun summer activities, but how do they challenge me to be my best in the winter? What all these sports have in common that they challenge my balance, my strength, my flexibility and ability to flow, to make quick decisions, to be present and learn to follow the natural patterns of nature. As a professional snowboarder for over 18 years, I have experienced that it is challenges like this that I get faced with during preparation for a contest or in the heat of the moment. Dropping in to the slopestyle course at XGames I have to be balanced, focused strong, confident and be able to adapt to weather and other external incidents that I have no control over. I have learned they hard way that if I do otherwise, I might get seriously injured. Sitting on the sidelines is no fun and that's why I use my time off the snow wisely, preparing my body and mind for situations that most likely will occur and be as strong, flexible and balanced as possible. I integrate and use all these fun, creative, self powered activities with my regular training, to help take my snowboarding and performance to the next level!

ADVENTURE TIME!

Get outside your comfort zone to discover your true self on a whole new level! This summer I embarked on an adventure and set out to paddle the whole #NaPalicoast in a kayak. This coastline, about 17 miles long, hosts incredible views of breathtaking nature and wildlife all along the way; Ocean caves, sacred valleys, intense hiking trails, tropical fish, sharks, dolphins, turtles, waterfalls and much more. For many adventurers this becomes their pilgrimage, as you definitely will face challenges on the way. It is no cell phone reception & the only way to get to the pristine beaches is to either hike the intense 11 mile Kalalau trail or travel by boat. Some people hover over the valleys in helicopters but I call that cheating 😜 I sure got my fair share of physical and mental challenges being out on the majestic ocean in a small kayak, floating over the waves in everything from stormy weather to calm turquoise water. At the same time I truly had a trip of my lifetime & would highly recommend embarking on this journey if you ever get the chance!

DREAMING OF WINTER!

Doing what I dream of --->&gt…

Doing what I dream of --->> Splitboarding in Colorado

We are responsible for creating our own DREAMS & we are here to remind each other that we can do anything we set our minds to. It can be scary to set out on the journey of finding our true purpose, but the more people who do it, the less scary it is. I find it very helpful to use nature as a guide for creating what I dream of; for example take a single seed (thought) plant it (write it down) and water and nurture it every day (journal & story board). One day you will see the sprouts and next you will see it grow bigger and bigger, but you have to keep watering it and you have to give it attention for it to reach its full potential. I believe the same principles can be applied to us and our ideas; We are capable of taking a single thought and manifest it as something of substance into our life's, meaning we can make our dreams into reality. Affirmation for the day --->> I am attracting what I want into my life. I am on the right path!

POST WORKOUT FOOD

As a professional athlete it is important for me to eat well and take care of my body. I love preparing food and spend a lot of time experimenting in the kitchen, learning how to combine different ingredients with the most nutritious value. I aim to eat food that has not been sprayed with harmful chemicals or food that has been grown in soil full of GMO's. I love to support local, organic, hydroponic farming and farmers and visit the farmers markets whenever I can. As my lifestyle contains of a lot of traveling I get to experience a lot of deferent food culture around the world. My travels + my passion for health is my inspiration for my creations in the kitchen. I don't eat much meat so I get to be creative with all the rich, plant based proteins out there. This is my yummy, post-workout bowl filled with the best of the best! It's easy and quick to make and will fill you up with everything you need after a session at the gym or an adventurous day! Enjoy :)

Lentils mixed with turmeric, sesame seeds, nutritional yeast and cayenne pepper + lightly steamed kale & squash topped over some wild rice. Add fresh, raw veggies like carrot, baby tomatoes red pepper and cilantro & finish with ripe avocado slices!

WELCOME TO THE PURPS TEAM!

Screen Shot 2014-09-04 at 4.15.58 AM.png

I am so honored to officially be a part of PURPS and their prestigious team! Here is what they wrote in their press release and blog about our new partnership --->>>

Purps is stoked to partner with four-time Olympic snowboarder, inspirational role model, and all around health advocate, Kjersti Østgaard Buaas. Kjersti discovered her love for snowboarding in Norway over 20 years ago. In her 14+ years as a pro, the four-time Olympian has locked down an impressive list of accolades, and crowned the “queen of snowboard style” for her performances in Halfpipe and Slopestyle. She attributes her longevity in the sport to friends and family, long hours training on-and-off the mountain and to a commitment to healthy lifestyle. Fresh off of her 12th X Games competition Kjersti has a busy travel schedule ahead, mixed with competition and a greater mission for community outreach.

If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers you might be factoring the early childhood events that helped propagate Kjersti’s success, or maybe considering how she logged 10,000 hours of training to break into her now 14+ year professional career. Kjersti highlighted some of the childhood opportunities that fueled her success.

“I grew up in the city of Trondheim, a northern municipality of Norway. As a kid, I was always very active. My mum and dad took my sisters and me to any activities we wanted to do. We did everything from cross country skiing, soccer, ballet, and dancing. My mom worked as a ski patrol at our local mountain called Vassfjellet (it means Water mountain), which is pretty funny and accurate because it does rain there a lot. She would pick us up at school and drive to the mountain and we would ski/snowboard all evening. We would get home around 9:30 PM, after she was finished patrolling the slopes. We were always the last ones to leave the mountain. Growing up there, first skiing, and then at age 12 snowboarding, I was inspired and motivated by the support our tight-knit community. The local older guys helped me learn tricks, supported me when I entered local contests and initiated my first ever sponsor deal with one of the local shops. From there, I traveled and competed in many of the local contests throughout Norway.”

Kjersti quickly transitioned from amateur to professional in just three short years. She won the Junior World Championships at the age of 17, and clinched her first World Cup contest victory the same year. From there the list goes on: World Cup, X Games, Olympics x 4. Kjersti holds several World Cup podiums, 3 X Games medals and an Olympic bronze medal. Kjersti bested 4th place at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and earned her bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy for her Halfpipe performance, only a short week after healing a broken leg. Not only is Kjersti a phenomenal competitor, she has an even more impressive longevity in the sport. The four-time Olympian has held down a steady 10-year run in the top ten of the World Snowboard Tour and isn’t planning on touring anytime soon.

Kjersti’s attributes her athletic longevity to her healthy lifestyle. Over the years, inspired by friends in the snowboard community, she realized that nutrient intake and diet are just as essential as the physical components of training. Many of her friends on tour followed the same thinking; throughout the years they challenged each other to broaden their perspectives on the meaning of health. Kjersti taught herself nutrition by researching a wide range of topics, and also by experimenting with dietary habits of her own. As Kersti’s awareness developed, she had an epiphany and opted out of her mainstream energy drink contract to resolve the internal conflict about promoting a product that did not align with her values. Today, Kjersti lives and breathes healthy lifestyle.

“I started eating organic food, I cut down dramatically on my meat intake and I integrated way more veggies into my diet. I also started practicing yoga and meditation. I quickly realized that it all connected into this beautiful circle of a healthy, natural lifestyle. I suddenly had more energy and clarity and I also stopped getting sick so often. Today if I feel run down I add some extra veggies and super foods and my health peaks right away.”

During her 14+ years as a professional snowboarder, Kjersti has created a broad platform to reach both younger and older generations. Kjersti now sees it as her responsibility to support products and companies that align with her core values. Shortly after the launch of Purps, our paths crossed and we were in awe of the lifestyle she lived. Kjersti is an incredible person and inspirational role model that lives and breathes the brand ethos. Purps + Kjersti are indeed a perfect match.

“I simply have been waiting for a company like Purps that is committed to bringing healthier alternatives to the market,” said Kjersti. “I am also passionate about sharing this message with the snowboard community and helping educate the youth about the importance of prioritizing good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. I’m so honored to partner with Purps and become an integral part of their already prestigious advocate team.”

Kjersti has a very busy schedule ahead of her. She’ll be collecting passport stamps and earning air miles as she crisscrosses her way around the globe to compete and inspire. We wish her well on her travels and are proud to welcome Kjersti to the Purps family. You can follow her story on and off the slopes at kjerstibuaas.com, purps.com, and on Instagram @kjerstibuaas@purps, Facebook and Twitter.
